R Rusty
chaotic good, extremely online, hack the world!

I make things that live entirely on my own hardware.

Hi, I'm Rusty. Desktop tools, Android apps, homelab servers, whatever a given problem needs. If a good tool for something doesn't exist, or the existing one wants a cloud account I don't want to give it, I just build my own. Below is what's actually shipped and running.

What I do

I'm a hobbyist systems tinkerer with a heavily customized Hyprland desktop and a small homelab of always-on servers doing the unglamorous stuff (backups, dashboards, a Discord bot). I don't just script things and move on. Every project here gets a real interface, real error handling, and actual testing against my own live setup before I call it done. If it's not something I'd trust running unattended, it's not finished.

Projects

Every one of these is public, AGPL-licensed, and running on my own machines.

terminal

caelback

A stdlib-only Python CLI that snapshots and restores my entire Hyprland/Caelestia setup, so I can dotfile-hop to any other rice and always get back to exactly what I had: configs, packages, systemd units, all of it.

Hyprform

A native GTK4/libadwaita GUI for editing Hyprland configs, both classic .conf syntax and Hyprland's newer Lua config API, with real form fields instead of hand-edited text files.

LiveWall

A wallpaper library manager for Hyprland with tags, favorites, search, and duplicate detection, layered on top of animated-wallpaper rendering, plus a fast tag-aware quick picker on a global keybind.

hub

Aurora + echo-dashboard

A repurposed Amazon Echo Show turned into a self-hosted bedside display. An Android backend on my phone feeds live weather, alarms, and notifications to a kiosk frontend over the LAN. No cloud, no subscription.

echo-dashboard-solo

A phone-free fork of the bedside display above, fully standalone, with its own journal, habits, reminders, sleep insights, and an offline star map. This is the version actually running on my nightstand.

FocusGuard

A real, enforced focus mode for Hyprland. Pick apps in a native GTK4 window, schedule or block them on the spot, and a background daemon actually stops them from running. No root required.

...and more on GitHub

A growing homelab of smaller self-hosted tools: status dashboards, backup automation, a LAN scanner, and the odd Discord bot, all built the same way, for real use, on real hardware, verified end-to-end.
